Turning Shoes into Water - A Modern Day Miracle

Last night I was driving along flipping through the radio dial, trying to catch a break from the same old insipid Christmas music (Oh, Little Drummer Boy – why must you torment me!) when I happened upon an interview on KDHX with George “The Shoeman” Hutchings.

If you live in the St. Louis area, you’ve probably heard of the Shoeman – he’s a pastor who’s dedicated his time and energy to collecting shoes, which he in turn sells for 35 cents a pound. The money he collects goes towards buying water drilling equipment that is used to drill for fresh water in Kenya (where it’s very much needed) and the shoes are sold for mere pennies to people in South America who need them.

George’s goal for 2009 is 200,000 pairs of shoes collected – a goal that, if met, will be matched by a generous cash contribution from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

There’s not much time left in the year and a whole lot of shoes that still need to be collected.

Do me a favor – take a minute to stop reading this and go to your closet. Look inside. See any shoes? If you’re anything like me, you have more than a couple of pairs that are outgrown or haven’t been worn for quite some time.

Ask yourself – what good are they doing taking up space in the closet? Wouldn’t it be nice if they could be put to good use? If they could help satisfy a basic need for someone? If they could help save a life?

Wouldn’t it feel good to give a gift from your heart and sole?

(I’m sorry, I’d promised myself I’d make it through this whole post without making the obligatory stupid sole/soul pun, but I just couldn’t help it.)

Click here for a list of shoe drop-off spots throughout Missouri and Illinois.

Or feel free to let us know if you have some shoes but need them picked up and delivered for you – Heather and I would be more than happy to oblige.
